The former Spartan captain has chosen his new school
Well, for those of you out there who were hoping that Tre Holloman would remove his name from the transfer portal and return to Michigan State, those prayers were dismissed today. The three-year Spartan, former captain, and “Defender of the Logo” has announced he is transferring to North Carolina State. The Wolfpack were one of four destinations previously announced to be on Holloman’s radar along with Baylor, North Carolina, and Villanova.
Tre will be playing for new NC State coach Will Wade, who just led McNeese State to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament. The word around the internet was that Holloman was searching for a place where he could be the starting point guard. At NCSU, last year’s starter, Michael O’Connell, is out of eligibility, as is his primary backup, Breon Pass. So, assuming there are no other starting caliber PGs coming to NC State this offseason through the portal (which can’t be ruled out with a new coach coming in), Tre should have the inside track at being the starting point guard in his final year of college hoops.
If I am being honest about my feelings here, I’m not happy about this. Let alone all my opinions on the transfer portal, this departure feels a little bit like betrayal. Tre had become the emotional leader of this team, and he should have had an even larger role next year, especially with Jaden Akins being gone. I am still shocked by this chain of events, and I don’t know how much time will heal this wound. I don’t get it and I don’t like it.
What do you think about this destination for Tre? How much hope did you have that he would come back to MSU? What will be your favorite memory of him in a Spartan uniform? And how much does his departure tarnish your opinion of him?
