What happened last week outside of Football, Basketball, and Hockey?

Cross Country was at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals in Madison, previewing the course where the NCAA Championships will be held next month. MSU went into the race with the women ranked 30th and the men in the “receiving votes” category. The MSU women finished 17th overall in the 6K race while the men were 18th in the 8K race. The Spartans will conclude the regular season on October 25 at the Eastern Michigan Classic.

Men’s Golf has wrapped up their fall season and will return to action with a couple of matches in Florida in February.

In Women’s Golf, senior Brooke Bierman was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week after leading the Spartans to a tie for second place at the Tar Heel Invitational two weeks ago. Bierman has been MSU’s top finisher in each of their three events this fall. Michigan State will conclude their fall season at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, NC on October 25-27.

Women’s Field Hockey fell at number 16 Penn State 2-1 in overtime Sunday. Penn State scored the decisive goal with just 32 seconds left in the OT period. The Spartans sit at 7-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference. They get Iowa at home on Friday, October 25.

The primary season for Women’s Rowing is in the spring but the Spartan novices (generally first year rowers and/or walk on athletes) will scrimmage at Michigan on Saturday. Coaches often agree on certain conditions for these fall scrimmages and official results are not always published. Regardless, this opportunity should provide some valuable racing experience for the younger Spartan rowers.

Men’s Soccer lost 3-1 to league leader Indiana on Friday to fall to 5-6-2 overall and 4-3 in conference. The Spartans must regroup quickly as they host Michigan for the Big Bear Trophy at 7 PM Tuesday at DeMartin Stadium. Michigan is 6-3-4 overall but only 1-3-3 in Big Ten play. The Hate Week game, soccer edition, will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

Michigan State v Notre Dame

Women’s Soccer rebounded from suffering their first loss of the season last weekend at Washington to defeat Northwestern 1-0 on Sunday at DeMartin. Sophomore midfielder Bella Najera scored the lone goal of the match in the second half. MSU sits at 11-1-5 overall, 6-1-3 in conference, and in fourth place in the Big Ten. The regular season concludes with a Sunday 10/27 1 PM game at DeMartin against Purdue. The game can be seen on Big Ten Plus.

After his win at the ITA Regional Singles Tournament on October 14, Ozan Baris was named Big Ten co-player of the week for Men’s Tennis. This is the third time in his career that Baris has won or shared this award, becoming the only Spartan to do so. Baris has already qualified for the NCAA Individual Championships, November 19-24 in Waco, TX. The team is preparing for the Big Ten Indoor Championships November 7-10 in Madison, WI.

Women’s Tennis is preparing to host the Michigan State Classic this weekend and the Spartan Classic November 1-3.

Women’s Volleyball dropped a home match to Washington 3-1 on Sunday to fall to 7-12 and 0-8 in conference play. The Spartans are on a West Coast swing this weekend, facing USC on Thursday and UCLA on Saturday. Thursday’s match will be on the Big Ten Network at 11 PM ET.
