Gymnastics to NCAA Regionals

Michigan State’s Gymnastics team earned a season high score of 198.150 on Saturday at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor. MSU led the meet through the first three rotations and this score was ultimately good for a second place finish. UCLA won the championship with a 198.450.

The 198.150 was Michigan State’s highest ever at a Big Ten championship and ties the second highest score in program history.

As far as individual honors, Gabrielle Stephen tied for first on the balance beam and finished in the all-around. MSU gymnasts went 1-2 in the vault with Olivia Zsarmani winning the title and Sage Kellerman placing second. Kellerman also finished second on bars and Skyla Schulte was third on the floor.

The Spartan Gymnasts will next head to the NCAA Regionals at Penn State, where they are the number 2 seed, to begin competition on Thursday April 3. Michigan State’s session begins at 1 PM on Thursday and they will be competing against third seeded Kentucky, Ohio State, and Penn State. The evening session pits number 1 LSU, number 4 Arkansas, Michigan, and either Maryland or West Virginia against each other.

The highest scoring teams from each Thursday session will then advance to the regional final on Saturday April 5.

In other Spartan sports, Baseball is off to a 16-7 start, including 3-3 in the Big Ten. The Spartans took two of three from Penn State in their last series. They head to Notre Dame for a single game tomorrow before a weekend series against Illinois in East Lansing.

Softball has dropped their last three games, all to #25 Ohio State, and sits at 9-15 overall, including just 1-6 in conference. They take on Central Michigan at home tomorrow before a three game weekend series against Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Men’s Golf is currently playing the second day of the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational. The 54 hole two day competition wraps up today at the Silverado Country Club in Napa, CA.

Women’s Golf, meanwhile, is headed to the Clemson Invitational this weekend.

Rowing will race for the first time this weekend at the Sunshine State Invitational in Sarasota, FL.

Men’s Tennis is coming off weekend wins at Indiana and Purdue and will next face Penn State on Saturday and Ohio State on Sunday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center. The team is 10-6 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten.

Women’s Tennis has dropped their last three matches, all against tough competition. After defeating #44 Penn State and #33 Nebraska earlier this month, MSU has lost to #10 Ohio State, #16 USC, and #24 UCLA. The Spartans are 10-7 in the spring season, including 2-4 in the Big Ten. They host Northwestern on Friday and Illinois on Sunday.

Wrestling concluded their season at the NCAA Championships on Thursday. Three Spartans qualified for the meet. Caleb Weiand went 1-2 in his three matches while Remy Cotton and Max Vanadia were both 0-2.
