How will the former Spartan fit in with the Bears plans
Luke Newman was the lone Spartan drafted in this weekends NFL draft. As one of our TOC commenters mentioned, how ironic the lone draft pick was an offensive lineman. I don’t think the irony goes over any Spartan fans head there. As a Bears fan myself, I see why the Bears took him. Let’s take a look at Newman and see what he can bring to the table.
PROS
One of the best things going for Newman is his experience. He started 49 consecutive collegiate games. Last season he played exclusively at left guard but prior to MSU he had over 1,400 reps at left tackle while at Holy Cross. Versatility at guard and tackle as well as his quick feet benefitted him being picked over some other lineman on the board. Newman did not allow one sack for the Spartans last year in pass protection. That, knowing the offensive line issues, is quite a remarkable stat. Newman has a wide base and strong anchor, he can be nasty with a solid mean streak. He also tested very well in the pre-draft process.
CONS
Newman’s length is one of his weaknesses and therefore needs more work on his lunging and wide hands technique. His power is a bit below average and how he tested pre-draft doesn’t always show up on tape according to Jacob Infante, NFL Draft analyst for the Bears. His weaknesses can be exploited quickly in the NFL playing against more experienced and stronger players.
HOW DOES HE FIT IN CHICAGO?
Newman will be going from one offensive line mess to another. The Bears offensive line nearly got Caleb Williams killed last year as the rookie was close to a record breaking number of sacks. Bears GM Ryan Poles has completely revamped the line via free agency and now the draft. Newman’s experience and durability are big pluses for the Bears. New coach Ben Johnson likely saw his share of Newman games at MSU being in Detroit last year. Johnson stresses quick feet for the schemes he runs offensively. With the weapons Chicago has built on offense the past couple of years, Williams will be needing solid pass protection to get the ball to players like Odunze, Loveland, Moore, Kmet, Burden III, Duvernay, and Swift. The Bears were in desperate need of depth on the line and Newman gives them that. Ozzy Trapilo was also drafted and he and Newman will have opportunities. Newman will give Poles that extra guy to push for a roster spot with his ability to take reps at guard and tackle.
In my opinion, Newman will make the final roster and likely see some rotated playing time this season. I’d like to see him bulk up a bit but maintain his speed. I give the draft pick a C+ for the Bears as I feel there were some other lineman that may have fit better. But, I’m not in Chicago’s front office and they seem to finally have a clear vision on their rebuild plan. Regardless, it was nice to see a Spartan drafted and as a Bears fan even sweeter!
