Let’s look at what the writers are saying after week 5
There was an instant classic down in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night. For those of you that were not busy watching the marquee Big Ten game that evening (MSU vs. Ohio St.), hopefully it was because you were watching the SEC’s game of the century of the year. Bama gave the Dawgs a massive punch in the first half, only for Georgia to give the Tide a massive punch in the second. Georgia took the lead with under three to go after trailing by as many as 28, but Alabama struck back with a 75-yard play to go back up. Georgia had one last chance, but a pass into the endzone was intercepted and Alabama escaped with the win. It was an unbelievable game, and it showed the rest of the nation that they are both going to be a problem for other teams as we get to the playoff. Don’t be surprised if they play each other again this season, maybe even twice.
Elsewhere around the country, we had two other top ten teams go down as Ole Miss lost to Kentucky (the first time they have lost to them at home since 1978!) and Utah fell to Arizona. Those two teams drop out of this week’s rankings and are replaced by Missouri and Clemson. Let’s see how the top ten shakes out this week.
10. Clemson – 9 points
9. Missouri – 15 points
8. Miami – 37 points
7. Oregon – 58 points
6. Penn St. – 61 points
5. Georgia – 65 points
4. Tennessee – 77 points
3. Ohio St. – 102 points
2. Texas – 104 points
1. Alabama – 117 points
No surprise the Crimson Tide are atop the rankings, and the SEC still has 4 of the top 5 and 5 of the top 10. The Big Ten has three in the rankings and Miami gets the ACC on the board.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Speaking of the Crimson Tide, Jalen Milroe was a near-unanimous Player of the Week, getting all but two of the votes for his 374 passing yards and 117 rushing yards for 4 total TD performance. The other two votes went to Boise St. RB Ashton Jeanty as he rushed for 259 more yards and four TDs.
HEISMAN WATCH
And in our Heisman Watch, we have a massive shakeup on the leaderboard.
4. Cam Ward, QB; Miami – 8 points (1st place last week)
3. Ashton Jeanty, RB; Boise St. – 17 points (4th place last week)
2. Travis Hunter, WR/DB; Colorado – 19 points (3rd place last week)
1. Jalen Milroe, QB; Alabama – 20 points (unranked last week)
Right now, it is Jalen Milroe’s world and we are just living in it… until next week.
