Report: Mets Showing Interest in 3.77 ERA Free Agent Pitcher

January 17, 2026 by Heavy

The New York Mets made their first big splash in MLB free agency this week, landing former Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette on a lucrative three-year, $126 million contract.

Bichette will switch positions with the Mets. Reports have come out that the team will be playing him at third base moving forward.

While the move for Bichette could be a great addition, New York has suffered some tough losses this offseason as well. Both Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz decided to leave town, signing with the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers respectively.

That should lead to the Mets remaining aggressive as they search for moves that can push them closer to World Series contention.

Keeping that in mind, New York has shown interest in an intriguing free agent pitcher. That pitcher is none other than Griffin Canning, who pitched in 16 games for the Mets in 2025.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported the interest from New York in Canning. He also noted that both the Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals are interested as well.

“The Mets have shown interest in bringing back Griffin Canning, who should be ready around Opening Day after suffering an Achilles tear last year,” Heyman wrote . “The Cardinals and White Sox also are interested.

Griffin Canning Would Be a Wise Move for the New York Mets

Canning may not be a household name, but he’s the kind of piece that every contender would like to have on its staff when healthy

During the 2025 MLB season with the Mets, Canning starting in 16 games as previously noted. He compiled a 7-3 record to go along with a 3.77 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, a 2.0 K/BB ratio, and 76.1 innings pitched.

After suffering the Achilles injury, Canning’s market has moved slowly this offseason. That could play perfectly for New York, who could circle back around now and try to bring him back.

At 29 years old, Canning still has some good baseball left in him. It would be wise for the Mets to bring him back, especially after he performed well for the team last season.

There Is Another Big Rumor Surrounding the Mets Right Now

Since signing Bichette, New York has been linked to another big name in free agency. Cody Bellinger remains on the market as the best offensive threat with Kyle Tucker now gone.

While he has been continuously working on a deal with the New York Yankees , the Mets could have a chance to swoop in late and steal him.

Bellinger is coming off of a 2025 season with the Yankees that saw him play in 152 games. He hit 29 home runs to go along with 98 RBI and a slash line of .272/.334/.480.

Those numbers would look great in New York’s lineup. An offseason that sees the team add both Bellinger and Bichette would look great. Throwing Canning into the mix would make it better.

It seems likely that the Mets aren’t done just yet. They’re going to try to do more work on the roster.

Canning and Bellinger are two names worth monitoring closely at this point in time.
