PGA Tour Star Announces Return Following Seven-Month Recovery

October 19, 2025 by Heavy

After roughly seven months away from competition, Will Zalatoris has confirmed his comeback–a significant moment for a player who once looked destined for the top of golf’s world rankings. The 29-year-old American announced he will tee up at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in December, marking his first competitive start since undergoing surgery in May.

Zalatoris’ absence has loomed large in golf circles. A winner on the PGA Tour, he had been contending in majors and sitting inside the sport’s elite before his health forced him off the course.

“Thank you to my team, friends, and family for being there for me throughout this journey,” Zalatoris said. “Looking forward to seeing everyone in the fall!”

The Injury and Its Toll

Zalatoris’ back troubles stemmed from herniated discs, a serious condition for any athlete–especially one whose game relies on precision, torque and repeated rotational motion. He underwent surgery in May and missed a significant portion of the season as a result.

“Hey everyone, sharing a health update,” Zalatoris said in a social media post. “This Spring, I started feeling some discomfort and instability in my back that progressively got worse.

“Following the PGA Championship, an MRI showed that I had re-herniated two discs. After discussing the options with my medical team, I underwent surgery this past Friday with Dr. Michael Duffy at the Texas Back Institute.

“I’m happy to say that I woke up feeling good and excited about my long-term back health. Time to focus on my recovery and get back after it.”

What made this layoff particularly challenging was the timing and context. At the point of injury, Zalatoris was viewed as a rising star with major-championship potential. Missing months of action can impact everything–swing rhythm, competitive feel, confidence and conditioning. The physical setback is one thing–the psychological aspect of coming back from it is quite another.

What His Return Means for His Game

When Zalatoris does return, it won’t simply be about showing up; it will be about how close he can get to his prior peak performance. He must rediscover his feel for shot-making, rebuild stamina for 72 holes, and regain the mental sharpness that elite golf demands.

He’s chosen an event on the DP World Tour calendar  rather than immediately re-entering a high-pressure PGA Tour major , which signals a measured approach. By easing back into competition, Zalatoris gives himself the opportunity to test his fitness, swing and competitive mindset before jumping into the deep end. This is a prudent move, not a rush.

Implications for the PGA Tour Landscape

Zalatoris’ return adds another layer of intrigue to the PGA Tour’s competitive field. With rising stars, established champions and global talent converging, his comeback means there’s one more serious contender in the mix. His presence elevates the stakes for tournaments, especially as golf wrestling with its own generational shifts.

As Zalatoris gets set to return, there are several key indicators to monitor: How will his swing change (if at all), how will his stamina hold up across four rounds, and where will his world ranking respond? These will give clues not only about his present readiness, but his near-term trajectory.

Equally important is the mental side. Will he exhibit the aggressive, confident style he showed before? Will he be tentative? How will bad shots or bad rounds feel after a long layoff? The answers to these questions will shape whether his comeback is merely a return, or a re-entry into the elite.
