The New York Mets have the top of the rotation starter, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports, citing sources, that the team has traded for All-Star right-hander Freddy Peralta and right-hander Tobias Myers. Going the other way to the Milwaukee Brewers are prospects Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams, per the report.
Peralta is a two-time All-Star who just turned in the strongest year of his career, finishing with a 2.70 ERA over 176 2/3 innings in 33 starts. The appeal only grows when factoring in the $8 million salary for the 2026 season, which is a clear bargain for a pitcher at that level.
With the Mets now having their No. 1 starter, SNY’s Jerry Blevins shared his thoughts on what the former Brewers standout brings to Queens.
“This is great,” Blevins said on Jan. 21. “He brings true front-end talent. This guy is durable. He knows how to last long into a game, and more importantly, into a season. This is what has been lackluster. This is what the downfall of the first real signs of struggle for the Mets last season was none of their starters could get them to that fifth inning, even the fourth inning at times; this is what Freddy Peralta does.”
Mets Now Have a No. 1 Guy in Their Rotation
Moreover, Blevins noted the arsenal of pitches that Peralta will bring to the rotation, which makes him the No. 1 guy that the Mets have been looking for. Peralta has a 70-42 record with an ERA of 3.59, 1,153 strikeouts, and one save in 211 appearances for the Brewers in his career, per StatMuse .
“He has a tremendous fastball,” Blevins added. “He knows how to miss barrels, and he can move the ball around. He’s got a great changeup to go with that, and he throws a ton of strikes. He’s not afraid to walk guys, understanding how to get guys to chase, but he’s a smart pitcher as well as a very good pitcher. They got a Top 15 pitcher. This is what puts them over the edge.
“They had a revamped lineup. We all know about the losses and what came in. But for me, none of that was going to matter unless they got a front-end starter, because that is truly the separator between teams that might want to win a World Series and teams that know that they can’t.”
Mets Farm System Can Absorb Freddy Peralta Trade
Meanwhile, SNY and The Athletic’s Will Sammon also weighed in on the price that the Mets needed to pay to get this deal done.
“The Mets were one of those teams that needed a quality pitcher at the top of their rotation,” Sammon said on SNY . “It may not have been the best offseason for that, but one guy in particular was Freddy Peralta, who was available, and he would have been a frontline pitcher, really, in any class.
“But in this one, the Brewers had a lot of leverage here, and it just forces David Stearns, or whoever was making the deal to acquire him, to part with something that was going to hurt. For the Mets, though, I will say that their farm system is in a really good spot where they should be able to absorb this.”
