Grammy Award-winning rapper Bad Bunny enthralled millions with his performance during the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday, earning strong praise from several New York Knicks stars and other NBA players.
Bunny’s performance at Levi’s Stadium included surprise appearances by Ricky Martin, Cardi B, Lady Gaga, Jessica Alba and Pedro Pascal, among other celebrities. The Puerto Rican became the first-ever artist to perform a Super Bowl halftime show entirely in Spanish, not to mention the first-ever male solo Latin artist to headline the event.
NBA Stars Praise Bad Bunny’s Performance
Knicks captain Jalen Brunson wrote, “Thank you Benito,” on X, on a night when his team hammered the Boston Celtics, 111-89, to reclaim the No. 2 seed in the East.
Karl-Anthony Towns wrote “NUEVAYOLLLLLLLL” along with a few fire emojis. The term NUEVAYOLLLLLLLL is said to be a phonetic, stylized spelling of “Nueva York” (New York in Spanish) to represent an emphatic shoutout to the Big Apple.
Meanwhile, Knicks guard Jordan Clarkson posted a few heart emojis in response to a post of a child receiving a Grammy from Bunny during the Super Bowl halftime show. Clarkson also made a series of posts praising Bunny’s performance, suggesting that the rapper’s concert was better than the on-field action between the Seahawks and Patriots .
Super Bowl Halftime Show Reactions
Elsewhere, Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell wrote BAD BUNNY along with a few exclamation emojis, expressing his excitement for the Super Bowl halftime show.
Former NBA player Admiral Schofield praised Bunny, but called for Drake to get his own Super Bowl halftime show.
“Dope by Bad Bunny! It’s time to give Drake his Halftime show!”
Meanwhile, Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic did not have a live reaction to Bunny’s performance, but he made his feelings clear on the Puerto Rican artist last week, when asked whether he’d be watching the Super Bowl halftime show.
“I think it’s really good,” Doncic said of his friend performing at the Super Bowl.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing him mainly because it’s him. I listen to him a lot so I can’t wait to see him,” added the Lakers star.
Bunny has previously name-dropped Doncic in several of his hit tracks, including “La Jumpa” (2022), which features the viral lyric, “Luka, stepback, La Jumpa,” referencing the Slovenian’s signature basketball move. The rapper also included the “Hoy salimo’ pa’ la calle, Luka Doncic, no hay manera que yo falle” (Today we hit the streets, Luka Doncic, there’s no way I’ll fail) in his track “25/8” released in 2020.
