Since LSU fired Brian Kelly on Sunday night, there has been no shortage of names linked to the opening. Even former Tigers coach Ed Orgeron spoke about returning to Baton Rouge recently. Imagine that!
It is considered the best opening right now of the Power Conference jobs ahead of Penn State and Florida. The school will have its choice of candidates, but the question will be, can they lure the coach of their choice to the position? One name that has been linked to a few of the openings was floated about by an analyst as a replacement for Kelly. The coach is very familiar with the SEC.
Former Texas A&M Coach Linked to LSU Opening
Rece Davis of ESPN College GameDay was on the College GameDay Podcast this week and floated the name of Jimbo Fisher to LSU. Why Fisher? There is a connection between Fisher and the school.
“If you don’t hit, and no matter who you are, sometimes you don’t hit on your first couple of preferred candidates,” said Davis. “They might go elsewhere. They might choose not to come. Whatever. It’s a different era, as we’ve pointed out. That guy won games. I know it got a little squirrely at the end at Florida State, and A&M didn’t quite do what he thought.
“I mean, can you even imagine? Politically, I don’t think [LSU AD Scott] Woodward can do that again after he’s already done it once and after the BK thing, he probably can’t do it again. But I bet there would be some people in Louisiana that wouldn’t balk at that. They remember the glory days of when he was running the offenses.”
The glory days of running offenses for Fisher would be his time at Florida State before going to Texas A&M. He won a National Championship with the Seminoles before taking over the Aggies. His offenses were always able to put up points. It was the defense that struggled and prevented him from winning more.
“It’s a far-out notion. But it just crossed my mind when I saw it,” Davis said. “Because I know of the affinity that Scott Woodward and the regard that Scott Woodward has for Jimbo Fisher.”
Jimbo Fisher Wants Back Into Coaching
Last week, Fisher made it known that he is itching to get back on the sideline as a coach after being away for a couple of years after Texas A&M parted ways with him. He has knowledge of the SEC, but would this be the best hire that LSU could make?
It’s hard to see the school going this route after Kelly flopped following the coaches before him winning titles. Kelly never came close. It feels like LSU would swing higher than Fisher, regardless of the ties he has to the AD.
There are going to be more names linked to the position, but Fisher feels like someone who, if he did return to LSU, would do so as a coordinator. That doesn’t seem like a route he would want to go, which makes it unlikely that LSU would heavily target from for the position.
