For quite some time now, the Calgary Flames have been adamant about downplaying rebuilding rumors. Despite selling off major pieces over the last couple of years, including the highly publicized Rasmus Andersson trade this year, the official narrative has been that the team is trying to compete.
While the standings would suggest otherwise, the organization’s stance has not wavered. But now, an enlightening interview with Flames prospect Ethan Wyttenbach drops an eye-opening admission into the organization’s rebuilding plans.
The Flames selected Wyttenbach with the 144th pick of the 2025 NHL Draft. As a fifth-rounder, much wasn’t really expected of him. Yet, his grown into a prolific scorer in the NCAA with Quinnipiac University.
In 36 games this season, Wyttenbach has scored 24 goals and 33 assists for 57 points. That’s a fantastic stat line. And it’s one that is gaining significant attention throughout the organization. Now, Wyttenbach has climbed up the ranks, becoming one of Calgary’s top prospects.
As Wyttenbach told R.org’s Marco D’Amico, that situation prompted the forward to state his drive to excel beyond expectations .
“Obviously, when I was drafted, being a fifth-round draft pick, it’s tough. You’re not valued as a first-rounder. I think I’ve tried to prove throughout the year that I think I could be involved in that category.”
His play has allowed Wyttenbach to sense a clear path forward with the Flames.
“Them (Flames) being in a rebuild right now, and trying to emphasize bringing in younger guys and playing younger guys, I think kind of jumping into the organization at this time is awesome.”
While one might think this was a Freudian slip, it was just an obvious statement that the organization has tried to keep on the down low.
Flames Prioritizing Youth over Older Stars
The movement towards prioritizing younger players over older stars makes total sense. The organization has jettisoned veteran stars like Rasmus Andersson this season. But he’s not the only one. Other players gone over the last couple of seasons have included goaltender Jacob Markstrom, Noah Hanifin, Chris Tanev, Nikita Zadorov, and Elias Lindholm.
That approach has opened the door for a rising star like Wyttenbach to come in and contribute to a winning situation. The Quinnipiac forward confirmed this assertion.
“They’re trying to give them as much experience as they can so that in three or four year’s Calgary’s competing.”
That’s the expectation for Flames fans and players alike.
Calgary’s Trade Deadline Could Open Even More Opportunities
The 2026 NHL trade deadline could open even more opportunities for the Flames’ prospects. Potential trades of current stars like Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman could accelerate the trajectory of young players like Wyttenbach to the big show.
That’s something crucial as the team gradually turns over its roster. With several key pieces in place, the focus will be on maximizing trade chips that could lead to plenty of dry powder down the line.
If anything, that dry powder could lead to draft picks that could lead to even more talented young players like Wyttenbach. All eyes will be on the Flames as the clock ticks down on the March 6 NHL trade deadline.
