Colby Covington has set his sights on UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre for a potential wrestling match in RAF. Covington makes his RAF debut against Luke Rockhold tomorrow night and seems to be interested in more than a one-off.
St-Pierre, a former two-division UFC champion, ruled the welterweight division for years. Despite not having a collegiate wrestling background, he was a very effective with his wrestling. He showcased his ability against other elite wrestlers and even beat them at their own game.
St-Pierre currently holds the record for most takedowns in the history of the UFC’s welterweight division with 90. Because of that, ‘Chaos’ expressed interest in testing himself against ‘Rush’ on the RAF mat.
“I’m No. 2 all-time on the takedown list at welterweight in the UFC right now. There’s only one person above me, that’s ‘GSP,’” Covington told reporters during the RAF 5 press conference. “I think that [match] makes a lot of sense.”
Covington emphasized that St-Pierre would be his preferred opponent should he continued wrestling for RAF.
“Without a doubt [St-Pierre would be my ideal opponent],” Covington said. “You look at the history list in the UFC. Takedowns, I’m No. 2, he’s No. 1. You know, he’s the only person above me. That’s who I want.”
Colby Covington says George St-Pierre is One of Many Potential RAF Opponents
Colby Covington made it clear that he would like to compete against Georges St-Pierre in a wrestling match. However, he also named others, including his former rival Kamaru Usman , as potential opponents who would excite him.
Covington and Usman had a well-documented rivalry that saw them compete in two UFC welterweight title bouts. Although ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ won both fights, they were tightly contested and could have very well gone either way.
Usman wasn’t the only former UFC champion Covington expressed interest in facing. ‘Chaos’ also named former UFC champions Belal Muhammad and Khabib Nurmagomedov .
“Yeah, definitely ‘Marty Fake Newsman’ [Usman] is someone that I’m gonna wanna fight until the day I’m dead. So, I’d love to wrestle Marty. Belal [Muhammad] would be a fun one,” Covington said. “Maybe Khabib [Nurmagomedov] has had some talks, he might want to come over. So, there’s a lot of good matchups that RAF can provide. I’m just super excited to get on the mat tomorrow night.”
Covington Reveals Why He Accepted RAF Wrestling Match Against Rockhold
Covington also revealed why he agreed to wrestle Rockhold at RAF 5 .
Both fought in the UFC but competed in two different weight classes. Rockhold will have the size advantage, especially having previously competed in as high as light heavyweight in the UFC. However, Covington has the edge as it pertains to wrestling experience, as he competed at the collegiate level.
Covington said Rockhold was an opponent who enticed him because of who he trained with at AKA.
“I was excited. [Rockhold] is a big name. He’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer, he’s a former UFC champion,” Covington said during the RAF 5 press conference. “He used to wrestle Cain Velasquez, Daniel Cormier , Khabib Nurmagomedov. So, he’s a great talented guy. He’s a strong guy, he’s a bigger guy.”
