Chiefs Announce Patrick Mahomes News Amid Offseason Moves

January 25, 2026 by Heavy

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are already in offseason mode, which is early for a franchise used to going all the way. So, they’re making changes, such as bringing back offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy for the 2026-27 season. But, despite the team’s difficult 2025-26 season and 6-11 record, there are still some positives in the Chiefs’ camp, such as Mahomes and star tight end Travis Kelce.

Of course, one of the big negatives was Mahomes getting injured on December 14, during the team’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, which they ultimately lost, 16-13. Towards the end of that game, Mahomes tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee, and he got surgery for it on December 15, 2025.

In a video shared to the Kansas City Chiefs’ social media pages on Thursday, January 15, the quarterback discussed his torn ACL and and LCL and said that he’s “hitting all the checkpoints” in rehab and hopes to return to training camp this fall.

“The doctor kind of gives you goals to get to,” he said. “I just try to maximize those – they hold me back, because I always want to go a little bit further.”

He added, “I want to be ready for Week 1. The doctors said I could be, but I can’t predict what happens throughout the process. That’s my goal … to play Week 1 and have no restrictions. You want to be out there healthy and give us the best chance to win. I hope to do some things in (Organized Team Activities) and training camp, and be able to do a lot there.”

But, let’s get to the positives. Mahomes, even injured, was a big motivator for his team during the 2025-26, and he’s being recognized for that.

On Saturday, January 24, Saturday, the Chiefs announced the news on X that Mahomes is the team’s MVP for the 2025-26 season. “This year’s team MVP goes to Patrick Mahomes,” the post read.

“My goat’s knee buckled under the impossible load y’all made him carry. Well deserved,” one follower stated on X . “Well deserved. What a season he’s had. He should sign a bigger five-year deal,” another added .

So, Mahomes may not be MVP for the NFL, but he’s MVP for the Chiefs. That’s a beautiful thing to think about as he’s rehabbing.

“What I’ve found out through this process is not every day is going to feel amazing,” Mahomes told the Associated Press about the injury . “You have to have somebody you trust that’s going to get the best out of you, but that’s going to keep you safe.”

A Snub for Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes

Travis Kelce he wrapped up the 2025 NFL season with 76 receptions, 851 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 17 games, according to NFL research , solid numbers, especially for a tight end of his age of 36.

But, both he and Mahomes, and the rest of the Chiefs, were snubbed in the NFL and AP’s MVP finalists.

On Thursday, January 22, the NFL and Associated Press announced the finalists for their annual honors for the 2025 NFL season. They’ll announce the final winners at NFL Honors on Thursday, Feb. 5 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.

Zero Chiefs were on the tally. They were totally snubbed for the awards this season.

Those up for the biggest award, MVP, include Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills, Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars , Drake Maye of the New England Patriots , Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers and Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams .
