The Denver Broncos have decided to part ways with the oldest player at his position in NFL history, waiving 41-year-old tight end Marcedes Lewis on Thursday, December 11, according to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.
Lewis was signed to Denver’s practice squad on October 29 and promoted to the 53-man active roster on December 6. He played in 4 games for the Broncos, although his time in Denver might not necessarily be at an end.
“Broncos TE Marcedes Lewis is being waived in a procedural move today, per source,” The Denver Post’s Parker Gabriel wrote on his official X account. “He’s expected to be back on the practice squad assuming he clears (waivers).”
Lewis was a first round draft pick (No. 28 overall) by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2006 and earned his lone Pro Bowl bid in 2010, when he had career highs of 58 receptions for 700 yards and 10 touchdowns. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound former UCLA star has approximately $64.5 million in career earnings.
“After making history as the oldest TE to ever play in an NFL game and the oldest Broncos player to ever take a snap, Marcedes Lewis has now been waived by Denver,” Preme Football wrote on its official X account. “If this is the end of his run, what a career. Nineteen seasons, the final active member of the 2006 draft class, and one of the most respected blockers and leaders of his era. Hell of a journey for Unc.”
Broncos Hit Home Stretch as NFL’s Hottest Team
The Broncos are the NFL’s hottest team with 4 games remaining in the regular season, with 3 of those games against teams who would be in the playoffs if the season ended today along with a game on Christmas Night against the Kanas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
Denver is 11-2 overall and has won 10 consecutive games headed into a Week 15 home game against the Green Bay Packers , where Lewis played from 2018 to 2022.
Denver Made Pains to Fix TE Spot in 2025
The Broncos were a surprise playoff team in 2024, going 10-7 in the regular season and snapping a 9-year postseason drought dating back to their last Super Bowl-winning season in 2015.
They did so without any sort of production from tight end, where the Broncos went out of their way to shore up the position in 2025, signing 2-time Pro Bowl tight end Evan Engram to a 2-year, $23 million contract after he was waived by the Jaguars in a salary cap move.
Engram has been something of a disappointment for the Broncos in 2025 with just 40 receptions for 347 yards and 1 touchdown, and hasn’t scored since a Week 5 win over the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles .
Bleacher Report called Engram the “Biggest Winner” on Denver’s roster after the Broncos failed to pull off any moves before the November 4 trade deadline.
From Bleacher Report : “Head coach Sean Payton likely wanted to bolster his 17th-ranked passing attack before the trade deadline, possibly at the expense of Evan Engram . This past offseason, Denver signed Engram to a two-year, $23 million deal, and he hasn’t quite played up to the team’s investment in him. The 31-year-old has 26 receptions for 215 yards and a touchdown in eight contests, but he’ll hold on to a significant role.”
