Where does the new MSU AD rank in the B1G
We all have heard the news of J Batt officially becoming a Spartan. Mike gave us some nice insight into the man himself and we will all be waiting with Rocky Horror antici……..pation to see if he can turn MSU athletics into a juggernaut.
Batt’s contract specifics went public yesterday, so let us see how it stacks up with others. Batt had recently signed a 5 year deal with Georgia Tech this past December. Clearly bigger fish and bigger money will make a person be willing to walk away. We’ll have to remember this in the future. Due to that recent contract, MSU is paying a 2 million dollar buyout and a base salary of 1.8 million annually. MSU has obviously decided to up its spending as Haller was making just under 1 million per year.
Here is a list of AD salaries I was able to come up with in the B1G with some potential errors due to individual built-in incentives altering the final number.
um: 2.4 million
UCLA: 2.1 million
OSU: 2.0 million
MSU: 1.8 million
Nebraska: 1.6 million
Illinois: 1.5 million
Wisconsin 1.5 million
Minnesota: 1.4 million
Maryland: 1.3 million
Oregon: 1.2 million
PSU: 1.2 million
Indiana: 1 million
This list of just 12 of the schools has MSU looking ready to make some moves. USC’s contract is laced with incentives and a huge buyout. Everyone else is either below 1 million or changing soon with incentives. Considering Haller was clocking in around 800k, MSU definitely has decided to try to get with the present and hopefully this leads to bigger things all around in all sports.
In case you were curious, the lower end of the NFL general manager salaries is 1 million and the higher end being 7.25 million. Now a GM is responsible for just one sport while the university AD’s are responsible for much more. The University of Tennessee is paying their AD over 3 million making the Vols the high rollers of collegiate athletic directors.
Taking a look at the money and the places that spend doesn’t necessarily buy titles. It can buy you athletes and stars next to their name, it can increase your expectations to a point that you need to steal signs, or keep you searching for answers. All we can do at this point is hope we found the right person and hope that MSU is turning a corner. There are no guarantees, but there can always be hope.
