Three of the Detroit Tigers top nine prospects make up quite the trio for Double-A as Matt Manning, Casey Mize and Alex Faedo make the Erie SeaWolves a must-see attraction in the Eastern League.
Detroit’s No. 2 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, Manning is 5-3 with a 2.14 ERA across 12 starts. The ninth overall pick in 2016, Manning is joined in the SeaWolves rotation by the Tigers’ No. 1 prospect and No. 1 overall pick in 2018 in Mize (6-0, 1.27 ERA) and the No. 9 prospect and first-round pick in 2017 in Faedo (3-4, 3.92 ERA).
“The goal is for all three of us to be pitching in the big leagues together,” Manning said in a conference call on Monday. “The more time we have together now is all beneficial.”

Manning’s 88 strikeouts in 71⅓ inning pitched are fourth-most in minor league baseball. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound right-hander was the organization’s pitcher of the month for May.
Mize, promoted to Double-A after the season started, threw a no-hitter in his first start with Erie. And Faedo threw seven innings of another no-hitter in April.
“Pitching with them has been a lot of fun,” Manning said. “I think we’re all pretty different in the way we go about our business, just taking small things from each other, maybe some of the analytics.”
Manning primarily throws a fastball, curveball and changeup. He said all three of his pitches are working well. Manning approaches games by utilizing his changeup early, then working in his curveball.
The 21-year-old Manning forfeited his college eligibility to turn pro out of Sacramento (Calif.) Sheldon High School three years ago.
He had some advice for the Tigers’ recent first-round pick, high schooler Riley Greene.
“Take it one day at a time and don’t let outside things effect your day to day stuff,” Manning said.
