The fifth overall pick in the 2019 draft was in Detroit for the yearly post-draft meet-and-greet today.
It’s a bit of a tradition to bring in first round draft picks for a meet and greet press conference with local media and the major league club. The Detroit Tigers top draft pick in the 2019 draft, prep outfielder Riley Greene, got the treatment on Friday, and even had time to take an impressive BP session with the Tigers.
For their part, the Tigers announced that Greene would start immediately and was set to report to Lakeland for Gulf Coast League duty starting on Monday. They also confirmed that there was no limitation on Greene’s workload this season, and discussed their long relationship with Greene and his family, and the extremely positive impressions he’d made on them along the way. It also sounds as though Greene will get the opportunity to stay in center field for the time being.
Chris McCosky of The Detroit News has more in his story on Greene’s visit.

There was a lot to like in Greene’s mix of composure and obvious excitement. He fielded questions on his conditioning and future ability to play center field on the vast lawns of Comerica Park he’d just viewed in person for the first time. Greene talked about the work he’d put in on his speed and overall conditioning, as well as his enthusiasm to get his pro career underway.
For his part, Greene made it clear that he was particularly enthused to meet one man in particular. He got the chance after taking some impressive BP.

In the end, this is just a promotional tour of course, and little of substance was said or done. But it’s very nice to see a promising young hitter entering the system either way. A lot of eyes will be on him as he takes the field with one of the Gulf Coast League Tigers’ squads next week.
Welcome to Detroit, Riley. Please hurry as best you can.
