2019 NFL Draft order: Detroit Lions 3rd round pick set after Eagles eliminated

A look at the Lions’ first three picks.

The Divisional Round of the playoffs is over, and 28 of the 32 teams have now seen their seasons come to an unfortunate end. As each team gets eliminated, the order for the 2019 NFL Draft becomes clearer. With the Eagles , Colts , Cowboys and Chargers all eliminated over the weekend, we now know the order of the first 28 picks in the draft. Here’s a look:

  1. Cardinals
  2. 49ers
  3. Jets
  4. Raiders
  5. Buccaneers
  6. Giants
  7. Jaguars
  8. Lions
  9. Bills
  10. Broncos
  11. Bengals
  12. Packers
  13. Dolphins
  14. Falcons
  15. Washington
  16. Panthers
  17. Browns
  18. Vikings
  19. Titans
  20. Steelers
  21. Seahawks
  22. Ravens
  23. Texans
  24. Raiders (from Bears )
  25. Eagles
  26. Colts
  27. Raiders (from Cowboys)
  28. Chargers

Most relevant to the Lions is the placement of the Philadelphia Eagles, at 25th in the round. In last year’s draft, the Lions sent away their third-round pick so they could select Da’Shawn Hand in the fourth round. However, they acquired the Eagles’ third-round pick by trading Golden Tate at the trade deadline this season. As a result, their one third round pick is 3.25. However, as Chris Burke of The Athletic noted , that pick will actually be 24th in the round, because the Giants already used their third-round pick to acquire cornerback Sam Beal in the 2018 Supplemental Draft.

So the Lions’ first three draft picks look like this (we can’t project past the third round because compensatory picks haven’t been awarded yet):

Round 1, Pick 8 (8th overall)
Round 2, Pick 11 (43rd overall)
Round 3, Pick 25 (88th overall)

Note: The Lions pick 11th in the second round because they rotate order with the other 6-10 teams in the rounds following the first

And for fun, here are the three players selected in those positions in the 2018 NFL draft:

1.8: LB Roquan Smith
2.11: RB Kerryon Johnson
3.25: LB Oren Burks

Yep, the Lions are slated to have the same position in the second round where they traded up to in order to grab Kerryon Johnson .
